Hygienist At Flower Mound General Dentist Practice Accepted To Dental School

March 31st, 2009 by golab

Tuesday, March 31, 2009- FLOWER MOUND, TEXAS – Registered Dental Hygienist Janette Jurek, who works for Dr. Jonathan Golab, DDS, recently was accepted to dental school at the University of San Antonio.

Jurek has worked for Golab, a Flower Mound general dentist who performs cosmetic dental procedures since August 2008. She starts dental school in July.

“I’m very proud of Janette,” Golab said. “This has been a dream of hers for some time, and I know she’s going to be a phenomenal dentist.”

Jurek initially considered dental school in her first year of work after having obtained a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene in 2002. She spent the past two years working on pre-requisite courses and applied to three Texas dental schools. She was accepted to two, and chose University of San Antonio because “they were the first and most eager to accept me,” she said.

Once dental school starts, Jurek will have to quit her job at Golab’s office.

“It’s a very rigorous eight-to-five program five days a week,” she said. “There’s a lot of studying on top of it because you take well into twenty to thirty credit hours per semester.”

The program is four years and if Jurek opts to specialize in periodontics, which she is considering, that could require an additional two to four years of education.

“Being a hygienist, my heart is in periodontics,” Jurek said.

Golab “wasn’t surprised at all” by Jurek’s acceptance into the program, Jurek said, adding, “He knew in my resume that was my intention.”

Jurek asked Golab to be her mentor.

“He’s been a great teacher,” she said. “It’s hard when you have your own patients, but he’s still tried to make time for me. We shoot e-mails back and forth and text each other on the weekends.”

Jurek had never worked for a cosmetic dentist prior to being hired by Golab, so she didn’t know a lot about the specialty.

“I definitely didn’t know how the health of the gums played such a large part in the strength and long-term prognosis of restorative work,” she said. “That has validated my job and the patients’ job as far as home care. He really opened my eyes up about this.”

Jurek said she also has admired Golab’s ethics and “how particular he is” about his work.

“It’s really nice to see someone care so much about their patients and their work to do it right the first time,” she said.
