Our practice has not utilized Mercury Fillings for over 12 years. The new standard of care involves the placement of inlays and onlays. These restorations essentially take the place of crowns (caps). Inlays and Onlays are a far more conservative restoration for your tooth than a crown. Extensive grinding down is not required to prepare the natural tooth for inlays and onlays. By keeping far more of your natural tooth intact, inlays and onlays keep your tooth stronger, and longer lasting.

Today's porcelain inlays and onlays are beautiful, and by default, actually strengthen your teeth and look very natural. The inlays and onlays are custom made to fit your tooth so they are able to be bonded securely and actually add integrity to the structure of the tooth. These restorations are virtually invisible and often cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Inlays are used when decay has occurred within the indention on the top of the tooth. Onlays are used when the decay is on the cusps or top protrusions of the tooth. The procedures for placing onlays and inlays are carried out similarly. The treatment usually takes two visits. First, the tooth is prepared by removing any existing filling or decay. Then Dr. Golab will take an impression of the tooth and place a temporary inlay or onlay. The impression will be sent to a dental laboratory where your custom porcelain inlay or onlay will be created. When you return to the office, the temporary will be removed and the natural looking porcelain inlay or onlay will be bonded to the tooth permanently.

There are many benefits to the use of dental inlays and onlays instead of metal fillings. They are natural looking and add strength and integrity to the treated tooth. Inlays and onlays do not require excessive reduction of the natural tooth so they are less invasive. Using inlays and onlays can help prevent more invasive procedures in the future such as crowns and root canals. Dr. Golab will be happy to assist you in replacing older, decayed, failing mercury fillings with beautiful, durable inlays and onlays.
