Teeth Whitening Dallas TX - Can Yellow Teeth be Avoided?

There are many causes behind a dull smile. Because we live in a time when we very rarely consume only naturally grown foods, there are many foods and beverages which can diminish a bright smile. While coffee has earned a bad rap for causing yellowing of the teeth, tea, red wine, hot beverages and soda are also just as guilty of stealing brilliant smiles. Such foods are high in tannins, which are the main culprit of staining. In order to diminish the effects of food and beverage on the smile, one can create the habit of brushing after every meal, snack and drink. Brushing with whitening toothpaste can help to improve the look of the smile; but is not completely effective at restoring the dazzle you were born with.

Habits such as smoking or poor hygiene may also play an impact on your smile. Just as it can cause fingernails to turn a yellowish hue, the tar, nicotine and other chemicals in tobacco smoke also discolor teeth over time, according to the National Institutes of Health. Poor oral hygiene can result in the buildup of plaque, resulting in dulling of a bright smile and yellow discoloration on teeth.

Less common causes of yellow teeth are antibiotics, specifically tetracycline, and genetics. Tetracycline prescribed to children has been known to cause yellowing or graying of teeth, according to the University of California Drug Guide. While this antibiotic may not be widely used in this time, it is always wise to discuss use of antibiotics with your doctor.

While the causes of yellow or discolored teeth vary, treatment options are available to fit every situation. There is never a reason to live with a smile that you don’t want to show off to the world! Discuss your whitening options with your dentist today.
