Everyone wants a winning smile. Our smile hugely impacts our lives, from social interaction and careers to how we move throughout the world. If you have small cosmetic defects such as tooth discoloration, porcelain veneers may be exactly what you’ve been needing to give you a perfect smile.
Porcelain veneers are made using ultra-thin porcelain shells that the dentist bonds to your front teeth. One way to think about porcelain veneers to visualize exactly what they are is to imagine false fingernails. Just as a fake nail fits over your natural fingernail, porcelain veneers are bonded to the front of your teeth.
Many people think of veneers as an option to camouflage discolored teeth, but they can actually be used for a number of different cosmetic dental problems.
The first thing that will take place in the porcelain veneer process is a consultation and thorough examination. The dentist will determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for porcelain veneers. If you have an underlying issue such as gum disease or cavities, these will first need to be addressed before preparing for veneers. Also, some people may have to get braces to straighten their teeth before being considered for porcelain veneers.
Once all other issues have been handled, you can begin the porcelain veneer process. The dentist will trim your teeth using a grinding tool to remove some of your dental enamel. This will ensure that your veneers are the correct size and blend perfectly with your other teeth.
The team will then take molds of your teeth that they’ll send to the lab where your veneers are created. You’ll work with the team to choose the color of your veneers, keeping in mind that they should match your natural teeth. In about two weeks, your veneers will be ready. At this time, you’ll come back to the office to have them bonded to the front of your teeth.
One thing to keep in mind is that porcelain veneers are permanent. Part of your dental enamel is removed to place the veneers, so this process is irreversible. With proper care, porcelain veneers last up to 10 years. However, some patients may have veneers for up to 15 years if they practice good oral care and regularly visit the dentist.Â
