Is Vaping Harmful for Your Teeth?

Posted on 2/20/2020 by Jonathan J. Golab, DDS, PA
Is Vaping Harmful for Your Teeth? Most people are already aware of all the damage that smoking traditional cigarettes can do to your teeth, but many see vaping as a safer alternative.

The reality is that vaping can damage your teeth as well. Even though you aren't physically combusting anything while vaping, you could be hurting your teeth more than you realize during the act.

How Vaping can Damage Your Teeth and Oral Health

The aerosol that's produced while vaping releases harmful chemicals into your body, including toxins like heavy metals that can lead to cancer and other nasty complications. These compounds will likely damage your oral health by causing things like mouth cancer over time, but we don't know for sure just yet.

Even with that unhealthy side-effect removed from the equation, vaping still puts nicotine into your body, and nicotine is very bad for oral health. Just by taking in nicotine you encourage your gums to recede, dry out your mouth, encourage bacterial growth and can potentially enhance damage to your teeth through problems with grinding. All of these side-effects add up very quickly and can lead to serious consequences for your teeth.

How Nicotine in Vape Packs Does its Damage

Nicotine reduces blood flow to your mouth naturally and this is what causes your gums to recede. When your gums recede you create unhealthy pockets beneath your teeth that help foster bacterial growth and lead to gum disease. Nicotine also reduces saliva production, leading to dry mouth and more bacterial and plaque growth. Finally, the compound works as a muscle stimulant that can increase the intensity of teeth grinding. If you have a problem with grinding vaping could make it worse for you.

Even though vaping seems like a less harmful option compared to smoking, it can still lead to a great deal of damage to your oral health and harm your teeth over time. That's why it's best to avoid vaping if you can do so. We encourage you to come into our office to get your teeth looked at to evaluate their health and to help protect them in the future.
