Microdontia is a dental condition in which a set of teeth or a tooth appears to be abnormally smaller in size than the others. Microdontia mainly affects the third molars and upper incisors. This condition can affect both adults and children of all ages.
Microdontia can be caused by a number of both medical and natural conditions. The most common causes include early exposure to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, especially children who are under the age of 6, this can highly affect the growth of teeth and as a result lead to the onset of microdontia. Children who suffer from Down syndrome have increased chance of getting microdontia. Chromosal disorder such as Turner’s syndrome is also a common cause of microdontia since it leads to a shortened tooth width. Babies who are born with a cleft palate and lip are prone to suffer from microdontia since it mainly tends to occur on the affected side.
There are a number of ways that can be used to fix microdontia. Such methods include surgery, where unerupted microdonts may be removed to prevent a cyst formation. Use of veneers is also a way of fixing microdontia. If you have very small teeth a dental veneer can be fitted over the teeth so that they can cover the front portion. Crowns can be used to straighten the teeth, thus giving it a more appealing shape. Veneers can also be used to strengthen the teeth. Minor microdontia problems can be fixed by the use of composite resin which is used in teeth binding and filling the gaps within the tooth.
